Peak District Destinations – Ashford On The Water

Staying in a one of the cottages in Ashford, a town which is located on the banks of a river is a great choice your Peak District holiday. It is located north of Bakewell and is a very unique part of Derbyshire as well as the Peak District so there is plenty to do in easy reach of the village.

If you like to explore, visit The Holy Trinity Church, which like many others in the region, is centuries old. Some parts of the church go back to the 13th century but much of it was rebuilt in the 1800’s as it had collapsed in places. Fortunately some of the original architecture has withstood the test of time.

From the 14th century, the lower section of the west tower, and the south door still has the original Norman tympanum depicting the tree of life, and in the center is a hog and wolf facing each other.

The church also has a number of artefacts that date from the 1600’s which include a chalice, a Jacobean pulpit, as well as a Perp style font.

An ancient custom from the 1700’s was to hang funeral garland made of white paper that had been cut into rosettes and attached to a wooden frame, then carried in front of the coffin in the funeral procession, then hung up on the roof of the church.

The village once was home to a candle-making industry, however there is only one house in the place of the old factory, located on Greaves Lane.

One of the most picturesque things you will find here is the Sheep Wash Bride. Historically this was used as a packhorse bridge, and later on it became popular with sheep herders who were able to wash their flocks here before shearing.

Ashford has long been known for all of the black marble that is produces. Once the marble is polished to a shine, it is used in mosaics, jewellery, table tops, and clocks. You can find black marble tables in the Ashford Church and throughout the U.S., as this type of marble has become very popular.

One of the most fascinating things in Ashford dealing with the culture of the village, is the dressing of the well that happens on Trinity Sunday. On this day, six wells are dressed, which means they are layered with leaves and other natural objects that can be found nearby. The objects are then placed on a bed of clay to create a picture.

Notable properties in the area include Ashford Hall which overlooks a beautiful lake that is part of the River Wye. Built in 1785 by Joseph Pickford, Ashford Hall has a lot of history and today it is privately owned and belongs to the Olivier family.

Just down the road from Ashford, you can also find a Georgian house that is T-shaped which is better known as Thornbridge Hall. Until the middle of the 20th century, the hall continued to be privately owned but has had a succession of roles being a college for teachers in training to an antique shop.

Learn Spanish Faster By Visiting Spain

There is no better way to learn the Spanish language than from the people that speak it every day.

One of the greatest advantages to learning Spanish in Spain is that you will be able to enjoy the wonderful sights and sounds of Spain as you learn. What better way to learn a new language than by soaking up the culture of the country where the language originated?

When in country you will not be bogged down with the grammar and mechanics of the Spanish language. You will be exposed to the language, dialect and facial expressions of native speakers day in and day out.

Think about this. When you were a baby, you learned to talk by repeating what you heard other people say. You had no idea how to spell the words you were saying and you were not concerned with what was a noun or a pronoun. You just enjoyed hearing yourself talk.

First let me tell you the one thing – don’t be afraid of it being hard, because the Spanish language is extremely similar to English. The sentence structure, and word pronunciation is just like English.

The simplicity behind it, makes reading Spanish a breeze, which will be particularly helpful as you are trying to read Spanish signs during your vacation. The main challenge is the large vocabulary list that you will need to learn.

Once you get the basics of Spanish words, then you will be able to figure out almost any sentence. There are thousands of Spanish words that you will be able to figure out, simply because you already know English. Another reason that makes Spanish easier to learn, is that all of the vowels have a constant sound.

You should surround yourself with many Spanish speakers as you can, before your travels. It will be great practice to start conversing in real life conversations with your friends because you won’t feel any pressure if you get something wrong, plus they’ll give you great help in correcting your mistakes.

Real Spanish speakers speak a bit faster than English speakers so its important to have enough practice to understand the faster paced style of speech.

Markets & Shopping Spots In London

The capital city of England, London, is nearly as famous for its incredible shopping opportunities as it is for its interesting history and fascinating culture. Folk from all ’round the globe take city breaks in London to take advantage of the immense selection of specialist markets, boutique stores and department stores. With the weak Pound and strong Dollar visitors from America will discover goods are nowhere near as costly as they can be, the same can be said for those visitors traveling from other countries in Europe because the UK £ is also finding it difficult against the Euro.

Famous Stores In London

Possibly the most well known of London’s department stores is Harrods of Knightsbridge the largest department store on the planet having about 18,000 m2 of floor space. The motto of Harrods department store is “all things for all people, everywhere” or ‘Omnia Omnibus Ubique’. Most folk associate Harrods with exclusivity and luxury and their food hall and toy department are world renowned

Selfridges is another department store worthy of a mention. situated on Oxford Street, the department store opened for business in 1909. Named after, and constructed by the businessman Gordon Selfridge Selfridges was especially designed so that the goods were more easily accessible to the buyers which was a drastic departure from the common practices of the day.

London Shopping – The Best Places To Go

Covent Garden has become very well known for its unusual and specialist shops and is generally accepted as a trendy place to frequent. As well as the fantastic shops you will also find a small number of restaurants and eating places in Covent Garden.

Another London market place which is well worth a mention is Camden Market. Although there have been a variety of markets in Camden at various times the present market only appeared in 1974. The market is actually a number of various adjoining markets altogether providing an amazing variety of wares.

Famous Shopping Streets In London

The main high street in Chelsea is the Kings Road which is one of London’s most chic and stylish streets on which to shop. The Kings Road was popular for clothes in the Sixties and Seventies and is closely associated with the Punk movement, these days the Kings Road is more subdued but still well worth visiting.

Sloane Street is another London road with a strong association with shopping which is named after Sir Hans Sloane who owned much of the surrounding land in the eighteenth century.

Staying In London

Getting to London is incredibly easy, being the nation’s capital transport links are superb and the London underground rail network makes everywhere very easy to get to.

London accommodation appears everywhere and is very easy to find but annoyingly it can be a bit expensive. It is usually best to book your London Hotel online where you will discover a broad range of accomodations.

Mental Arithmetic Tricks To Impress Others

Mental Arithmetic Tricks to Surprise Others

While putting together a divisibility part for my web site that deals with mental arithmetic exercises, I came across some interesting facts about numbers that, to someone who does not understand these things, would seem like mental arithmetic magic.

In case you don’t know, the divisibility of a number refers to whether a number can be evenly divided by another. For example, 24 is divisible by 2 but 11 is not as it leaves a remainder.

Here are some mental arithmetic magic tricks I have found that you can use to surprise your family.

1. if a number is divisible by 3 then so are the numbers based on mixing up the digits of the original number. For example, consider 123 which can be evenly divided by by 3. Then 132, 213, 231, 312 and 321 (which are obtained by mixing up the digits 1, 2 and 3 that make up 123) are all divisible by 3. This is called a permutation of the digits of a number. Check it for yourself!

2. to make up a number that is divisible by 4, make up a number and tag on the end any 2 digit number divisible by 4. For example, I make up the number 111111111, and now I tag 16 (which is divisible by 4) on the end to get 11111111116. This number is divisible by 4. Check it for yourself!

An interesting trick follows on from this one. The following numbers can all be evenly divided by 4: 116, 1116, 11116, 111116, and so on . . . Not what you would expect!

3. if a number is divisible by 6, then any shuffle of its digits will give you a new number divisible by 6 as long as the last digit is even. For example, 1272 is divisible by 6. Permutations of its digits while keeping the last digit even gives me 2172, 2712, 1722, 7122, 7212 which can all be evenly divided by 6. Check it for yourself!

4. to make up a number that is divisible by 8, the process is very much like point 2. above. Make up a number and tag on the end any 3 digit number divisible by 8. For example, I make up the number 777777, and now I tag 016 (which is divisible by 8) on the end to get 777777016. This number is divisible by 8. Check it it for yourself!

Another interesting trick follows on from this one. The following numbers can all be evenly divided by 8: 1016, 11016, 111016, and so on . . . Again, not what you would expect!

5. if a number is divisible by 9 then so are the numbers based on mixing up the digits of the original number. For example, consider 189 which is divisible by 9. Then so are 198, 819, 891, 918 and 981. Check it it for yourself!

6. if a number is divisible by 11, then permutations of its odd digits and/or its even digits will give you a new number also divisible by 11. For example, consider 154 which is divisible by 11. Then so is 451 (obtained by swapping its first and third digits). Another example, consider 1122 which is divisible by 11. Then so is 1221 (obtained by swapping its second and fourth digits). Check it it for yourself!

7. if a number is divisible by 12, then any permutations of its digits (except for the last 2) will give you new numbers also divisible by 12. For example, 14652 is divisible by 12. Then so are 16452, 41652, 46152, 61452 and 64152. Check it it for yourself!

You would have to agree that such tricks do look like arithmetic magic which you can do in your head. In case you are wondering ‘why is it so?’ The trick lies in the test that determines whether a number is divisible by another.

The Whales At Los Cabos

I find it fulfilling to go up the mountains or maybe spend time by beach. I’ve traveled to many places just to see beaches from all over the world. Last January, my good friends Ardie and Kyle invited me to join them for their trip to Los Cabos. Being a frequent traveler, I thought it was just another normal beach to go to. Of course I still wanted to enjoy a good vacation but there wasn’t really much excitement on my part. But that perception changed upon reaching Los Cabos Mexico.

Instead of checking in our hotel upon arrival, we headed somewhere else first. Our contact and guide Julio, insisted that we go straight to the beach. Upon reaching the beach, there were a lot of people on the shore and several boats on the waters. I tried my best to get through the crowd to have a look, and I what I saw was just remarkable. There was a group or family of gray whales just roaming around near the shore unafraid of humans. Some of the boats were so near to them but they seem unbothered. Having seen whales for the first time, I was in awe.

After that brief moment by the beach, we headed off to a hotel in Los Cabos where we unpacked our things and settled for awhile. All I wanted to do was go back to the beach and find a small boat to rent. Kyle looked at me with a grin thinking how I quickly had a change of heart. We quickly got a boat and set off to sea. And there I was, a few feet from these large amazing animals. The splashes the whales made on the waters got us all wet and enormous as they may seem, you could feel that they are actually gentle creatures. I was asking myself why I never bothered to visit the place before although I’ve heard so much about it from others.

Now, I’m planning to go back to Los Cabos. There are several places to see the whales up close including Cabo Pulmo, Puerto San Carlos, and Lovers Beach.

Furniture Worth Hanging Onto

Perhaps your favorite chair is starting to rip and fade and you’re debating whether you should bother reupholstering it or just replace it. In these very difficult economic months, many of us are looking for creative means of saving money, and salvaging something we might ordinarily toss out or donate, is worth considering. here’s how to tell if it’s worth saving.

How Good is the Skeleton?

The quality of most furniture can be gauged by its frame or skeleton. Is it made of flimsy particle board that’s glued together, or rather strong, solid wood that’s well-jointed and structurally sound? Does it look durable, or like it might break at any second?

Remember, everything from cushions to upholstery to springs can all be replaced at one point, but you simply can’t polish something that is fundamentally junk. So, look for a piece of furniture that has a good, sound foundation.

How Easy is it to Fix?

If a piece is going to take months of sanding and repairing, it may not be the project for you. While you may enjoy taking a large-scale furniture project on as part of a hobby, it simply might not be worth it if you don’t enjoy the repair process. Instead, look for a piece that’s easier to fix.

Is it Dated?

While it’s true that you can’t get rid of a classic piece, it’s also true that you can’t update something that’s too dated. For example, unless you’re going for a retro look, not much can be done for a linoleum and aluminum table.

Instead, look for pieces that have a classic and timeless look which won’t go out-of-date. Again, remember that you can always update the upholstery or the fabric without too much expense.

Does it Have some Sentimental Value?

If the furniture has sentimental value, you may not want to replace it at all. For example, your mother’s old rocking chair, a cherished wedding present or a favorite chair are all items that are worth preserving, no matter what the cost.

For heirloom items, always treat them with care and maintain them properly to ensure they enjoy a long life with your family for decades to come.

Essentially, the answer to how to know when furniture is worth saving is in asking yourself how good the skeleton is, how easy it is to fix, whether the piece is dated and if it has sentimental value. By evaluating the piece with those 4 questions, you’ll know when to give the furniture that extra life-preserving effort.

Get To Know Your Pharmacist

The two very important health care professionals you have are your doctor and your pharmacist. Unless you are hospitalized, or undergoing surgery, a large portion of your health care needs are going to come from the local pharmacist. You probably know your doctor’s name, but do you know the name of your pharmacist? Those who do most likely do business with an individually owned pharmacy, an under-utilized resource for excellent health care.

While all pharmacists have roughly the same training, a pharmacist in a huge chain pharmacy or drug store often is supervising the work of technicians. While this is an efficient means of dispensing medications, most patients do not interact with the pharmacist and are not able to utilize their knowledge and experience. In some franchises, it is easier to get the store manager to aid in assisting you with a cold remedy than the pharmacist or pharmacist technician, and a patient would be lucky if the pharmacy staff offered to check and confirm there were not any adverse reactions between the over the counter medicine and any prescribed medicines they are taking.

Mom and Pop pharmacies are usually owned and operated by the same person. Running a non franchise drug store is extremely challenging, but a lot of them would tell you that they got into the business to care for people, not just hand out pills. Mom and Pop pharmacists take on the extra trouble because they truly want to give an added measure of care than what they can do as a supervising pharmacist in a large chain.

I do know the name of my pharmacist, by the way, and like my doctor he knows I am married, work as a webmaster and go to church on a regular basis. I know that if I have a medication related question I can contact him and ask, and he truly cares enough to listen carefully. My pharmacist knows everything you need to know about medicine, as well as being a extremely well educated health care provider he is familiar with a wide variety of helpful remedies for illnesses or injuries that may not need a visit to a doctor. A good pharmacist can help with bruises and sprains, with bandages and braces. Inquire about fevers that are unexpected or unfamiliar skin irritations with your pharmacist and they will likely know what to do. Many pharmacies carry items that make life more managable when taking care of an elderly parent, or can offer counsel on managing chronic illnesses like Diabetes.

Mom and Pop pharmacies run by an owner often do specialty work such as compounding. A compounding pharmacist can customize the dosage or delivery method of medications for customers. Women who are getting hormone replacement therapy sometimes greatly benefit from tailored dosages made possible by compounding pharmacists. Other services include counseling to find better medications for patients who look for a more effective remedy or seek a cheaper alternative to their prescription. In many states, a pharmacist can provide flu and pneumonia injections as well as travel vaccinations for your out of the country trip. Your community pharmacist is often a great resource for vitamins, minerals and herbal preparations.

To take full advantage of your pharmacist as a member of your health care group, visit and ask to meet him or her. Convey to them about your health concerns. Pharmacists, like doctors, are lawfully bound to treat your personal health information with complete confidence. You can find a non franchise drug store in your neighborhood by running an internet search for drug store and your city name.

It is one thing to have a whole bunch of doctors practicing in a number of specialties, but having many pharmacies can be quite dangerous, as medication interactions are a real danger. Having all your medications with one pharmacy adds an extra measure of safety. After you have found a pharmacist you are comfortable with, bring in your medications so he or she can review them.

Motorcycling Charity Ride

MotoZania, the motorcycle social network site is dedicated to helping promote motorcycle charity rides. Today we would like to encourage you to check out Broc Glover’s Breathe Easy Ride Against Cystic Fibrosis.

Broc Glover’s Breathe Easy Ride Against Cystic Fibrosis invites all street-legal motorcycles for a ride in solidarity against cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease that steals the breath of over 70,000 children and young adults around the world.

The Breathe Easy Ride was inaugurated in 2008 by American Motorcycle Association Hall-of-Fame motocross champion, Broc Glover, shortly after his 6-year-old son, Dayne, was diagnosed with the cruel and life-shortening disease. In its first year, the Breathe Easy Ride exceeded all expectations in raising both funds and awareness plus proved, once again, that the motorcycle community is unmatched in its compassion.

The 2009 event will again see hundreds of registered riders, as well as, many of motorcycling’s most recognized legends, start from Old Town Temecula and follow a scenic 100-mile route through San Diego and Riverside counties’ most beautiful roads. New this year is a limited-entry, dual-sport ride, guided by AMA Hall of Fame off-roader Scot Harden.

All proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s on-going mission to find a cure or control for cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.

Statistics
About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year.
More than 70% of patients are diagnosed by age two.
More than 40% of the CF patient population is age 18 or older.
The predicted median age of survival for a person with CF is more than 37 years.

The Broc Glover’s Breathe Easy Ride is the only event of its kind, bringing together the who’s who of the motorcycle world in a show of solidarity against cystic fibrosis.
Becoming a sponsor of the Breathe Easy Ride will connect you directly with hundred of event participants, as well as, thousands of nation-wide supporters that are driven to this web site. It has been proven that participants will patronize businesses that have a presence at events that support non-profits and their causes, and that the goodwill associated with those businesses that are long-lasting.

Making Sure You Get The Authentic Item When Buying Signed Items

If you want to make sure that the sporting item that you are buying is the genuine article, don’t buy it without photographic proof that the item has genuinely been signed by the sports star in question. Ideally, all signed items that you buy will come with a photograph of the person as they signed it, along with details of the individual serial number of the signing, the date and venue of the signing event and even what pen was used for the signing.

The safest and most reputable method for obtaining genuine signed items is quite obviously by approaching the sporting star yourself and asking for the signature personally. But this is very hard to do, as these people are busy and quite often not wanting to be disturbed when they are just about to compete, or have just finished competing, which is when most approaches are made.

The next method is to buy signed items from well known and well established, licensed companies and their authorised distributors. These companies have entered into contracts with the sporting stars who will be paid to sign items exclusively for the one company for the duration of the contract. The licensed company is then able to provide security features such as certification, numbering and even registered tamper proofs holograms for the signed items. They can also send an official company witness along to a private autographing event to, or may turn the autographing event itself into a publicity opportunity. Professional representatives of the sporting star may also attend the autographing events to add to the levels of security. This means that signed items that is well authenticated can become a good investment for the future.

When buying signed items, there are various methods of producing non genuine goods that should be watched out for. The first example is the autopen, which is a mechanical device set up to sign flat items. These can be spotted by the fact that the autographs all turn out the same, although sometimes the pens are swapped to make them appear different on first glance. The lines of the autographs are also of an even thickness as the pen is held perfectly vertical, not at an angle as most people hold a pen.

Another trick is to just copy the original signed item and send that. Study the autograph carefully and check that it is over the printed item and not part of the card that has been printed with it. On a glossy photograph, you would expect the writing to be above the level of the gloss, not under it.

There are many more ways to detect fraudulent autographs. The best way to ensure a genuine signed item is to approach reputable sellers.
