Dumfries, situated, on the banks of the River Nith, not that far away from the Solway Firth is, by a great amount, the most populous town in the southwest area of Scotland (the population is in excess of thirty thousand souls). Dumfries, like Ayr, has a great many associations with the life and times of Robert Burns, the great poet.

For people planning to take a vacation in Dumfries we have listed details of three popular places worth visiting; Dundrennan Abbey, Robert Burns House and Lochmaben Castle:

Dundrennan Abbey

King David I founded Dundrennan Abbey in 1142. At this time, Scottish abbeys were more often built of a reddish sandstone, but Dundrennan Abbey was constructed of very hard-wearing, local grey sandstone. This is probably the reason why many of the unique architecural mouldings and forms have survived. The first monks to live in the Abbey, were supposedly to have come from Rievaulx, Yorkshire. Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night on Scottish soil at Dundrennan Abbey in 1568. She then found her way across the Solway Firth to Workington, and was shortly imprisoned and captured by the English. In 1587, following the Scottish Reformation, the property was passed into the hands of the crown.

Lochmaben Castle

The Lochmaben Castle, that we see today, was not the first Lochmaben Castle. The first was erected by the Bruce family, Lords of Annandale, in the 1100’s. In 1298, King Edward I of England seized the castle, and then constructed another Lochmaben Castle in a more efficient defensive location. This second castle was completed at the start of the 14th century, leaving the old castle derelict. From 1306 to 1588, the castle was either in the hands of the English or the hands of the Scots. It was in 1588 that James VI attacked and seized the castle from the Maxwell family. The castle was eventually abandoned after the Union of the Crowns in 1603.

Robert Burns House

One of the most famous men in Scotland, Robert Burns, lived in Dumfries during the last years of his life. The house that he and his family once lived in has now become a place of pilgramge for his fans from across the globe. He left this mortal coil prematurely at the age of 37 years in 1796, at home. Today, one can catch a glimpse of how he and his family lived, back in the late 1700’s. The desk and chair where he sat and composed are exhibited, as are many of his orginal manuscripts. On display there are personal items as well, that once belonged to his family.

If you are considering having a vacation in Scotland and you wish to spend some time in Dumfries you may want to book your accommodation online and you will discover listings of accommodation and hotels in Dumfries to be quite helpful.

Treatments for Acne Scars

There has been much research into the disease known as acne. Although there have been incredible advances in our learning and understanding of the annoying symptoms, and their treatment, there has been hardly, if any, advancement in our understanding of its main causes, however, we have learnt much more about things that can effect it, either negatively or positively.

Acne is a condition of the skin which is recognizable by the red, angry appearance of the skin as well as pimples (spots or zits). In acne the sebaceous glands in the skin excrete far too much sebum (oil) which cause the hair follicles and pores to become blocked. These blocked pores are commonly called whiteheads and blackheads. The pores of the skin become inflamed and infected which causes spots or pustules (zits) to form. With acne sufferers the normal process of shedding the dead skin cells does not work in the correct way which leads to the the build up of dead skin cells further clogging the pores.

Anyone can be vulnerable to acne, it is not discriminatory, however, it is usually found more often in teenagers. Hormones are a known trigger for breakouts and, as teenage bodies are more than likely to be flooded with hormones, they carry most risk. As well as the obvious physical symptoms, acne can cause the sufferer to become immensely self-conscious and acutely wary of their outward appearance. Annoyingly, even after an outbreak of acne the sufferer can be left with very visible acne scars.

How acne is treated is usually dependent its severity. Very severe breakouts of acne should be treated by a medical professional who will, usually, recommend a course of prescription antibiotic creams, tablets, capsules or liquid (to be taken for about 6 months. Commonly a topical antibiotic cream is prescribed as well as oral antibiotics. Another commonly recommended treatment is Microdermabrasion, which can be done at home or in a spa.

The best way to treat scars is to begin early and continue with the treatment for as long as is required. The reduction or removal of acne scars depends on a method referred to as skin remodeling. This is a natural process in the skin but there are ways in which to accelerate it. The following treatments all help in this process; chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser treatments or scrubbing massages.

The paramount thing a person must do before starting on any form of treatment is to seek advice from a medical professional. Together with any prescriptive medicines, the physician will often advise a change in lifestyle. By drinking plenty of water, exercising and eating a healthy diet, you can vastly improve the condition of the skin (you are what you eat).

Wart Removal and Treatments

Most of us have been afflicted with one on our body, you should know how annoying they are. They are called warts. These little lumps of skin can be more of a problem than you may anticipate. As children, most of us may not think anything of the little bumps, but as adults they can be more than a little embarrassing at times. One thing is for sure that you can bet on, when we get them, we would like to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Do you remember back in the days when you were a kid, and you had that fat wart on your thumb? Everyone told you that you must have been playing with toads or frogs. Instead, warts are merely another virus on the infinite list of other viruses. We are able to treat and dispose of these nasty little suckers. It just takes a trip to the doctor’s office to find a treatment process that’s right for you.

I remember when I was about four years old, having a wart on my hand. Being the careless, little bundle of joy that I was, I ripped it off with my teeth. Now, you might say this is an improper, and less than sanitary disposal of a wart, however, it did work, but was much more painful than I had anticipated. These days it is certainly not the most prudent idea to take such measures, while there are other solutions to warts.

Doctors will offer such solutions as shocking or burning the wart, which essentially kills the virus at the roots and causes the wart to boil and fade away. Freezing warts is another option which is accomplished with liquid nitrogen of some sort I believe. However, the fastest method is with a simple surgery in my experience. They remove the wart and kill any sign of the virus, hence ridding you of future warts.

It’s interesting that all methods of warts removal, don’t work for everyone. A friend of mine resorted to the shocking or burning treatment, which actually started the wart’s regression, but then eventually turned into a larger wart. That’s not inspiring! Whatever you choose to rid yourself of the old warts on the hands or elbows, you may want to check the drugstore on the corner. Over the counter remedies are becoming more effective with new medical developments and may save you some cash.

Vacation in Scotland at Castle Douglas

Castle Douglas is located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. During the 18th century the town of Castle Douglas had something like a makeover by William Douglas, a local boy, who planned to make his home town into a noteworthy commercial and industrial center. Sadly the enterprise failed, however the town benefited slightly with some lovely buildings built from a mix of gray granite and red sandstone and a straight main street called King Street. As Castle Douglas is only 18 miles from Dumfries it has a great many tourist attractions and places of interest and we describe 3; Threave Gardens, Castle Douglas Art Gallery and Threave Castle:

Threave Castle

located on an island in the middle of the River Dee, is the stunning Threave Castle. The journey to the castle itself is rather exciting. First one has a ten minute stroll over farm land and through woods, where one comes upon a jetty, at the river’s edge. Here you will discover a brass bell that is the signal for the boat man to come and transport you across to the castle. Threave castle was erected in the 1370’s by Archibald Douglas (Archibald the Grim), soon after he became Lord of Galloway. Threave remained his strong hold until his death in 1400. The origin of the name Threave comes from the ancient Welsh word for Homestead, ‘Tref’.

Threave Gardens

Liverpool businessman, William Gordon, bought Threave House and estate, as a summer dwelling for his large family, in 1867. The 24 acre Threave Gardens were developed alongside the house, and are now a popular visitor attraction. The National Trust for Scotland continue to develop and maintain the house and gardens, as well as running the visitor center. There are a variety of gardens around the estate, including the
Woodland Garden, Secret Garden and Peat Garden. In springtime, the parade of daffodils are magnificent, and captivate visitors from far and wide. A favorite of children who visit Threave Gardens is the Discovery Garden. It was devised to inspire children, with its mown grass paths twisting through wild flower meadows.

Castle Douglas Art Gallery

The Castle Douglas Art Gallery is an excellent venue, which plays host to an array of crafts and arts throughout the year. Many touring exhibitions are exhibited regularly, as well as temporary exhibitions, all running from Easter to Christmas. The art gallery was founded in 1938, and was given to by the artist, Mrs Ethel Bristowe. In 1996 the gallery was refurbished with finances from the National Lottery. Many of the displays in the gallery, including photographs, are for sale. Close to the gallery, are two other attractions, Threave Garden and Threave Castle. These are to be found no more than a few miles away.

Three Captivating Places You Must Visit In Ayr, Scotland

Ayr is the largest town on the coast of the Firth of Clyde and, for up until the 17th century, it was an important trading center and seaport, amazingly, at one time, it was almost the same as Glasgow in importance and size to the country of Scotland. The towns tourist trade really started in the nineteenth century. These days Ayr is still a popular place for tourists to stay due, in part, to the towns relationship with Robert Burns but also because of the numerous visitor attractions to be discovered in and about Ayr. Below we have listed information about three popular tourist attractions to visit; The Electric Brae, The Auld Brig and Greenan Castle.

Greenan Castle

Roger De Scalebroc built a fortress, during the 12th century which was later the site of Greenan Castle. In 1476, the Lands of Greenan were lost by John, Earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles, for his treason against James III. The Lands of Greenan were then given to William Douglas, who was the son of Archibald, Earl of Angus, by James IV, in 1493. The rectangular tower house was erected in the beginning of the 17th century, by John Kennedy Baltersan, and the original fortess was swallowed up in this construction. Constructed on the edge of a sheer coastal cliff, Greenan Castle is in a picturesque locale, with breathtaking views. Not far from the castle is a large stone, where the Scots and the Picts allegedly signed the peace treaty.

The Auld Brig

The Auld Brig is not the only bridge in Ayr, in fact, over the years there have been three. The other bridges were the New Brig and the old iron footbridge. Years before the Auld Brig was built, in 1470, the only way over the river, and into town, was across a wooden bridge. In 1788, the New Brig was built, but alas was washed away during a flood about one hundred later. Once again the Auld Brig became the main crossing until another New Bridge could be built (1878). A lot of people have heard of the Auld Brig thanks to Robert Burns, who composed the poem, ‘The Brigs of Ayr’.

The Electric Brae

This natural phenomenon can be found in Ayrshire, Scotland. The Electric Brae is a gravity hill, where a stationary car on the road, with the brakes off, will appear to steadily move uphill. This is purely an optical illusion which is because of the way the landscape lies. There used to be metal markers on the road marking the spot, but these have now been substituted with a stone cairn. The stone cairn is also engraved with an explanation of the Electric Brae. Originally people thought the phenomenon was caused by an electric or magnetic force within the Brae, hence the name.

If you are thinking about taking vacation in Scotland and you wish to spend a little time in Ayr you may want to book your accommodation online and you will find Ayr hotel and accommodation listings to be helpful.

Saving on Homeowner Mortgage Insurance

Twelve Ways to Lower Your Homeowners Insurance Costs

Insurance is a very competitive business and the price you pay for your homeowners insurance can vary by hundreds of dollars, depending on the insurance company you buy your policy from. Companies offer several types of discounts, but they don’t offer the same discount or the same amount of discount in all states. That’s why you should ask your agent or company representative about any discounts available to you. Here are some things to consider when buying homeowners insurance.

1. Be sure to shop around.

It’ll take a few phone calls, but they could save you a good sum of money. Ask your friends, check the yellow pages or call your state insurance department. Also check consumer guides, insurance agents and companies. This will give you an idea of price ranges and tell you which companies or agents have the lowest prices. But don’t consider price alone.

The insurer you select should offer both a fair price and excellent service. Quality service may cost a bit more, but it provides added conveniences, so talk to a number of insurers to get a feeling for the type of service they give. Ask them what they would do to lower your costs. Check the financial ratings of the companies, too. Then, when you’ve narrowed the field to three insurers, get price quotes.

2. Raise your deductible.

Deductibles are the amount of money you have to pay toward a loss before your insurance company starts to pay according to the terms of your policy. Deductibles on homeowners policies typically start at $250. By increasing your deductible to $500, you could save up to 12 percent; $1,000, up to 24 percent; $2,500, up to 30 percent; and $5,000, up to 37 percent, depending, of course, on your insurance company.

3. Buy your home and auto policies from the same insurer.

Some companies that sell homeowners, auto and liability coverage will take 5 to 15 percent off your premium if you buy two or more policies from them.

4. When you buy a home…

Consider how much insuring it will cost. Because a new home’s electrical, heating and plumbing systems and overall structure are likely to be in better shape than those of an older house, insurers may offer you a discount of 8 to 15 percent if your house is new. Check its construction, too. Brick, because of its resistance to wind damage is better in the East; frame, because of its resistance to earthquake damage, better in the West. Choosing wisely could cut your premium by 5 to 15 percent.

Avoiding areas that are prone to floods can save you $400 or so a year for flood insurance. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood-related damage. If you do buy a house in a flood-prone area, you’ll have to buy a flood insurance policy, too. Does your town have full-time or volunteer fire service? And is your house close to a hydrant or fire station?

5. Insure your house, not the land.

The land under your house isn’t at risk from theft, windstorm, fire and the other perils covered in your homeowners policy. So don’t include its value in deciding how much homeowners insurance to buy. If you do, you’ll pay a higher premium than you should.

6. Beef up your home security.

You can usually get discounts of at least 5 percent for a smoke detector, burglar alarm, or dead-bolt locks. Some companies offer to cut your premium by as much as 15 or 20 percent if you install a sophisticated sprinkler system and a fire and burglar alarm that rings at the police station or other monitoring facility. These systems aren’t cheap and not every system qualifies for the discount. Before you buy such a system, find out what kind your insurer recommends and how much the device would cost and how much you’d save on premiums.

7. Stop smoking.

Smoking accounts for more than 23,000 residential fires a year. That’s why some insurers offer to reduce premiums if all the residents in a house don’t smoke.

8. Once you retire…

Retired people stay at home more and spot fires sooner than working people. Retired people have more time for maintaining their homes, too. If you’re at least 55 years old and retired, you may qualify for a discount of up to 10 percent at some companies.

9. See if you can get group coverage.

Alumni and business associations often work out an insurance package with an insurance company, which includes a discount for association members. Ask your association’s director if an insurer is offering a discount on homeowners insurance to you and your fellow graduates or colleagues.

10. Stay loyal to your insurer.

If you’ve kept your coverage with a company for several years, you may receive special consideration. Several insurers will reduce their premiums by 5 percent if you stay with them for three to five years and by 10 percent if you remain a policyholder for six years or more.

11. Compare the limits in your policy and the value of your possessions at least once a year.

You want your policy to cover any major purchases or additions to your home. But you don’t want to spend money for coverage you don’t need. If your five-year-old fur coat is no longer worth the $20,000 you paid for it, you’ll want to reduce your floater and pocket the difference.

12. If you’re in a government plan…

If you live in a high-risk area - say, one that is especially vulnerable to coastal storms, fires, or crime - and have been buying your homeowners insurance through a government plan, you should check with an insurance agent or company representative. You may find that there are steps you can take that would allow you to buy insurance at a lower price in the private market.

GPS navigation began in 1991 as Palmtop, a business to develop applications for the first handheld computers. Initially those applications were business oriented, but soon individuals wanted personal organizers to keep track of their fast paced lives. The company then began to develop games, dictionaries, personal finance products and route planners for PDA’s (personal digital assistants). As the demand for these applications grew globally, specifically after the launch of the successful Palm Pilot, the handheld market expanded rapidly and Microsoft also got into the game. Palmtop developed applications for all these units.

TomTom 720 is an extension of the tom tom line that we can expect to see in future. The Tom Tom GPS looks like the ONE XL, but a bit thinner than the ONE XL, so it is extremely bright and very easy to read. This one sounds meticulous but is a major saver.

3) Use Waiting Time: The next time you visit your dentist, or while waiting for your dinner to cook, use the time to catch up on reading or planning. When that is done utilize, the time to sort, tidy or just think.

4) Give Thanks: The next time someone helps you out with something, be sure to offer praise. This can be to a subordinate, co-worker or to a member of the family for any effort you have noticed. They will be happy to help you again, next time you need them.

5) Do it Now! Do not allow for the luxury of procrastination. If you do, this will only stress you out when you think about that hateful “to do” item on your list. Start by tackling the largest or most disliked job first, dividing it up into manageable tasks. At this stage, the other jobs will be a breeze!

6) Administrate Chores: Delegate those tasks that you have no time for or team up with someone who can help you the most.

Telephones occupy a higher plane in the scheme of modern telecommunications technology. One of the most important modes of remote communications, it presents people with a convenient and easy way to touch base with anyone who is not with them. Because of its importance, almost every home in the United States owns at least one line, while there is always a phone ringing in offices and businesses at any time of the day.

A newer, but still equally vital, communications channel is the Internet. Developed in the second half of the 20th century, its usage has caught wildfire in the last couple of years, effectively breaking some of the long-held traditions of doing things. E-mails and instant messaging (or chatting) are used by top-level executives and rank and file employees. The Internet is also heavily used for sharing files, research, on-line shopping, and entertainment purposes.

The internet today is also used for other purposes. Your kids can use it to research for their term papers, you can use it to purchase products and services and you can even use it for entertainment by playing online games, listen to streaming music or watch streaming videos.

In conventional landline phones, you will see that each of these features are considered as extra feature and they will charge extra monthly fees for using a specific service. With VoIP, all these features are free.

The fact that it uses the Internet to transfer and receive digital data, makes VOIP calls much cheaper than the conventional landline phone calls. With the landline phone, a five-minute call can cost a lot of money. Internet voice calls of the same duration costs a fraction of the landline charges. Some VoIP providers even offer free long distance and overseas call.

Besides free phone calls, VOIP Providers usually throw in extra phone features, such as three-way calling, caller ID, audio conferencing, video conferencing, call waiting and return call, in the package. Traditional phone companies also offer these services, albeit, with extra cost.

This is why many VoIP service providers today are now offering a trial period, usually 30 days, for clients to test the quality of their services. If you are not satisfied with their services, you can simply inform your service provider that you are no longer interested in using their services. If you do this within the trial period, you will be refunded.

With many providers offering a trial period (usually 30 days), you may now test the quality of their services. If you are not satisfied, you can simply inform the company that you are no longer interested to use their services. If you do this within the trial period, you will be refunded.

It is recommended that you should apply for a service provider that is already trusted by the community and offers a broad range of great incentives for their clients, such as free long distance calls, unlimited calls to specific countries and other things like that.

By getting the best VoIP service provider, you can be sure that you can definitely benefit a lot and get great value for your money.
