The Ancient Art area of the museum has a number of antiquities from the Greek, Roman, Etruscan, and Egyptian cultures. Coins, jars, pottery, and funerary art are just a few of the different types of works visitors will see at the Art Institute of Chicago. The European Painting and Sculpture section has more than 3,500 paintings and sculptures from the 12th century to about the middle of the 20th century. Many of these paintings are quite rare, and you will want to stop and see all of them. The sculptures are also very impressive. Besides simply having items from ancient cultures and medieval times, there are also contemporary artists’ works, from painting, photography, sculpture and more hanging inside the museum. You can see some of Ansel Adams photographs in the museum, as well as work by William Eggleston. The permanent exhibits at the museum are exquisite and known throughout the world, however, the museum offers even more. They have a variety of rotating exhibits that offer looks at other pieces and collections from other museums. These exhibits change often, so you will always be in for something new when you visit the museum. No art lover should miss this museum. If you are in the Chicago area, take a tour.
