This may seem very surprising to most people as they would usually relate tattoo to beauty and aesthetics purposes but not medical ones.

Used as a form of indicator, tattoos are used to define the outer limit of a treatment area in radiation therapy to ensure that the radiation is applied accurately and consistently to the same spot. In reconstructive surgery, tattooing is used to help create a normal looking nipple and areola for women who lost their breasts to cancer surgery.
