Not So Breaking News

I never cease to be amazed at what some network media outlets deem newsworthy. Here’s the lead-in to an “insightful†report heard just this morning on one of the major news shows.
“Service men and women that have been overseas in Iraq are experiencing more ‘post traumatic stress syndrome’ than those that haven’t been stationed thereâ€.
Well duh! That sure is a surprise – Gee, I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the ones in Iraq were actually in a war zone.
If that’s not a shocker, they went on to say that those that pulled duty in Iraq are also drinking more and gaining weight – another eye-opener!
For the record, I have only the highest regard and appreciation for the men and women serving in the armed forces. Regardless of what one believes about the war in Iraq, the people serving there have a tough job.
In fact this rant is partly due to those very facts. While the war and issues related to it are certainly newsworthy, it’s obvious that this so-called news item was the result of a reporter unable to find a real story.
The fact that they then tried to prop up this lame work by linking it the news-worthiness of the war and the armed forces makes it even more pathetic.
