Adams Golf Club Driver

After finally conceding I’m never going to play enough golf to get as good as I’d like to be, I broke down and got an over-sized driver as a shortcut way to improve my game. Yes, late to the dance, but hey the driver I had was still serviceable and I’m frugal (okay, cheap). Anyway, it seemed a reasonable compromise to compensate for spotty accuracy which is the natural result of not playing that often.
After playing a couple rounds, the verdict was no real surprise. Overall the tee shots showed substantial improvement, connecting well nearly every time. It’s amazing what that large club head with its huge sweet spot will do. Drives were much straighter and distance was phenomenal. Only thing is, it’s so forgiving, a bad swing can still connect absurdly well, with the ball disappearing at the end of a slice that went who knows where.
Anyhow, this article isn’t really about the advantages of an over-sized driver which is a no-brainer, but about how captivating brand names can cause us to part with more dollars than we need to. The club I ended up buying is made by Adams Golf, although that’s not actually the make I’d originally intended to purchase. What I had in mind was one by Titleist, having tried their oversized driver in the past and liked it.
So in the store, I’m comparing several; the Titleist as well as a host of other brand names including Taylor-Made, Calloway, Ping, and so on. The consistent thing about all these brands was the hefty price tag, which was probably why I’d instinctively avoided making this purchase much sooner. But continuing to browse, I saw the one by Adams Golf. Now Adams is actually a golf equipment manufacturer whose brand has been around for a long time. However they don’t have the same notoriety or brand recognition as the heavily advertised big brand names. But those who’ve taken the time to do a little research know their reputation for making quality products at reasonable prices.
For the style of club with features I was looking for, all the big names commanded a price of $250 to $400 while the Adams Golf driver was $100. Must be something wrong – right? Nope, already did the comparisons – basically we’re talking the same club. What struck me was how we can weigh the evidence, make a rational decision, yet still be drawn to something different solely because of brand awareness. Just goes to show how effective advertising can play to our ego. However, rational thinking (and being cheap) asserted itself, and in the end I bought the Adams Golf Club driver. And you know what? It played great and even caught the attention of my golf buddies.
